Dear Reader,
It has now been almost two months since I shifted my website to Substack, and I am really enjoying this journey. My website now feels alive, with regular, almost daily posts. I can honestly say that I am curating my own online magazine, covering subjects that I am passionate about: photography, self-esteem, mortality and the meaning of life, personal reflection, Malta, travel, interviews, books and the environment.
I am sure that, with time, I will continue to give my website more identity. What I am beginning to realise is that, after sixteen years of photography, it is time to connect photography with the other interests in my life. For example, photography and writing about the environment, or photography and empowering others. I feel that this is part of my journey of growth.
Unless I evolve, I do feel that I, as a person, will become stuck and eventually bored with what I used to enjoy. Although being bored can, in itself, be a good teacher, being stuck in boredom for a long time is not healthy at all.
As human beings, we are made to create. Through our ideas, our imagination and our inventions, we contribute something to the world around us. This leads me to my next point.
As writers, we have a gift that can change the world through what we write. Writing throughout history has shaped societies, challenged ideas and given people the courage to voice what they believed in, even when their opinions were unpopular. Martin Luther King Jr. is one example of someone whose words helped challenge an unjust society and inspire a movement for equality. Bit by bit, words can change the world. I believe that this gives us a moral obligation to use this gift well.
As the saying goes, the pen is mightier than the sword.
In an era of individualism and greed, let us join together to bring hope to a world where hope can sometimes feel increasingly bleak. Let us inspire hearts and minds so that, as humanity, we continue to fight the noble fight towards what is truly good.
Perhaps that is where I would like this little magazine of mine to go.
